Hoarding and Cluttering
Information for Landlords
What is Hoarding and Cluttering?
Compulsive hoarding and cluttering refers to the acquisition of and
failure to discard a large number of possessions, which appear to be
useless or of limited value, in an attempt to decrease stress and
anxiety. This serious and prevalent problem can lead to eviction and
homelessness.
What Are Some of the Causes of Hoarding and Cluttering?
Compulsive hoarding and cluttering is a feature of several
mental illnesses, in particular obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and
also attention deficit disorder, major depression and head trauma, and
can be caused or aggravated by problems associated with increasing age or
physical disabilities. Sometimes, major life changes like divorce, death
of a loved one, unemployment, severe illness or the birth of a new child
can affect one’s ability to discard household items.
Is There Any Difference Between Hoarding and Cluttering?
Most clutterers call themselves hoarders, but fortunately, only a very
small percentage of clutterers are truly hoarders. Media stories often
focus on hoarding, since hoarding makes better copy than cluttering.
According to psychiatrists and psychologists that have been interviewed, less
than 1% of the population hoards. While hoarding is a serious psychological
condition that can only be diagnosed by a psychiatrist, here is a brief
discussion of the differences between hoarders and clutterers. The psychology
of cluttering and hoarding are very different.
A hoarder cannot make rational decisions about what is useful and what is not.
Thus, the hoarder often saves garbage or soiled items.
A hoarder obsesses about his/her stuff and is compelled to collect it. A clutterer
just lets it pile up. It isn't given much thought. It seems to flow into our
lives without any effort on our part.
A hoarder is usually unaware of anything being wrong. If someone is concerned about
his/her clutter, she/he is in good shape.
A clutterer becomes overwhelmed by his/her stuff and has emotional attachments to
possessions but does not save garbage. A clutterer often has some of the following
symptoms: low self-esteem, difficulty in making decisions, fear of loss and failure,
mild depression, belief that she/he doesn't deserve any better. A clutterer holds onto
items and relationships that do not serve him/her because of these beliefs.
Always consider the differences before labeling someone. As always, professional help
can be a big boost in recovery.
